Enchantment Celebrates the Spring Equinox with Ceremonies of Renewal

SEDONA, Ariz, (March 13, 2015) – The Spring Equinox is a time of new beginnings.  It’s the season of birth and regrowth as seen in the budding trees, flowers and butterflies in the canyon.  This connection to nature and to the earth’s rhythms reminds us that we can also renew ourselves.

Guests are invited to join in these special ceremonies below, organized and led by Allan “RJ” Joseph, a Northern Plains Cree, to mark the Spring Equinox, a sacred time of year for Native Americans.

Friday March 20

Spring Equinox Ceremony, in the Crystal Grotto:  11:30 am – 12:30 pm. As the sun passes over the small oculus in the domed ceiling of the Crystal Grotto, it spotlights the central quartz crystal and illuminates the space.  Celebrate this sacred time, sharing traditions and planting seeds of thought for growth and prosperity in the coming months.  Space is limited.

Saturday March 21

Apache Crown Dancers, at the Tipi: 10 am – 11 am. This public version of a deeply sacred Apache ceremony features masked dancers from the local Yavapai-Apache Nation in Camp Verde and San Carlos Apache Nation.  The dancers wear symbolic headdresses representing the mountain spirits called ‘Gaan.’

Che Ah Chi Documentary Screening, in the Mii amo Library: 6 pm-6:45 pm.  As writer and director of this historical documentary about the canyon’s history, Allan “RJ” Joseph will lead a question and answer session after a screening of the 30-minute film.

Sunday March 22

Walk to the Ruins, meet at the Medicine Wheel: 9:30 am – 10:30 am. A unique opportunity to learn the teachings and history of the first people to inhabit Boynton Canyon.  The walk (on property) includes viewing  archeological ruins in the cliffs through binoculars.

Peace Pipe Teachings, at the Tipi: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm.  A celebration of peace in the Native American culture traditionally involves the smoking of the peace pipe.  Learn the importance this ritual holds for various tribes.
